The Bennington Flag

Years flown: Initially thought to have flown 1777 during the Battle of Bennington. Actually, first flown during the War of 1812

Presidents: James Maddison

States added: Delaware,  Pennsylvania, New Jersey, Georgia, Connecticut, Massachusetts, Maryland, South Carolina, New Hampshire, Virginia, New York, North Carolina, Rhode Island.

Contains 13 stripes with white stripes being the outermost (all other flags have red outermost stripes) and 13 seven point stars. Also, the blue canton spans nine stripes instead of seven.

It is also called Fillmore flag, based on the legend that Nathaniel Fillmore carried this flag off the battlefield at the Battle of Bennington during the American Revolution. This flag was then passed down through the Fillmore family. Mrs. Maude Fillmore Wilson donated the flag to the Bennington Museum.

Based on the materials used to construct the flag, others believe that the flag was made at least twenty five years after the American Revolution and crafted as a commemorative item representing the spirit of 76.
